When the first Star Wars movie hit the theaters in 1977 the futuristic robots portrayed as C3P0 and R2-D2 were mind-blowing to watch. These robots could not only walk and talk, they could think for themselves. Moviegoers ate this up, turning the Star Wars franchise into a multi-billion dollar industry. But we knew these “beings” were only make-believe. Or are they?

Collection of Toy RobotsWe have made considerable strides in the robot-arena and have now incorporated robotics into many aspects of our everyday living. Let’s take a look into some of the more common “robots” that are making our lives easier.

In the 5th century BC a friend of Plato’s by the name of, Archytas of Tarentum, built what may have been the first ever robot. This mechanical bird was powered by compressed air and was sure to have been more than impressive at the time.

Today, robots can sense and respond to their environment. This is done by placing electronic sensors in their ears, eyes and hands. Microphones are used to detect sound, two cameras are placed in the eyes to give it a 3D perspective and motion sensors are in the fingers – the touch perception is used to allow the robot to judge how much pressure is needed to grasp objects. This is all used in coordination with a built-in computer chip that can send and receive information.

Other strides we have made in the robotic world are the use of robots in the US military. Currently there are around 4,000 of these doing various jobs. The Talon bots is one example and are deployed to search out roadside bombs in Iraq.

The medical field in Australia are hoping researchers will be able see their vision of a Mini Me robot. This teeny tiny robot would be able to mimic the E. coli bacteria. The plan is to develop this robot so it can injected into the human body and have the ability to take a biopsy from the inside.

Some people believe as the world gets closer to creating artificial intelligence, the closer we become to having them take over the world – crazy fanatics or people that may be more intune then the rest of us? You decide. At the Bristol Robotics Laboratory, Chris Melhuish, has designed a robot that uses a bacteria-filled fuel cell. This is designed as a robot-food and will produce electricity from rotten apples and dead flies. This means, basically, the robots could look for their own food source and would not need to depend on humans to survive.

    Robots created a big change in the way that we work today and that is totally a big advantage. They can make all our job faster than before and more easier for humans. But there are questions in my mind like what will happen to our planet if artificial intelligence will be take the place of workers and what will happen if robots dominates our planet? There are lots of questions regarding the enhancement of technology that I really wanted to seek some answers.

    Some people still haven’t been able to give a robot enough ‘common sense’ to reliably interact with a dynamic world. A robots is a system that contains sensors, control systems, manipulators, power supplies and software all working together to perform a task. This kid video book will encourage children to make their own robot.

    Robots have been developed by extended modern research, and are being used in numerous industries for achieving advantages which would not be possible with the human beings.

    The “Proper” definition today is “An automatic device that performs functions normally ascribed to humans or a machine in the form of a human.”
    And this is what robots are really meant to do, in manufacturing, or in laboratories, and recently in Hasmat and Defense environment.
    The “robots” which we see driving around in arenas smashing each other, only perform an entertaining function, and are also used for educational purpose.
