All About Planet Earth

Children's Bokk About Planet EarthPlanet Earth. It’s the third planet from the sun. The place called home by every living species and where we keep our stuff. It’s perfectly designed with gravity, oxygen, water and everything it needs to sustain life. Let’s take a trip around the earth to discover what she’s all about.

A Rendered Presentation of Planet Earth with Caption.Out of all the planets discovered we are the only one that can sustain life. Our atmosphere contains 21 percent oxygen and it is the only one with liquid water on its surface. Without these we would just be another rock floating around the sun. Earth is also the only inner planet to have one large moon. And as you probably know, the moon is paramount in the pull of our tides and also gives us the minute lengthening (or shortening) in each of our days.

Layers of the EarthThe earth is 7,928 miles (12,760 kilometers) around the diameter or the equator. We are also situated 93 million miles (150 kilometers) from the sun. Although some of those hot summer days may feel like we are closer.

When earth is viewed from space, much of the land mass or surface of our planet cannot be seen. The clouds of water vapor hanging in our atmosphere gives earth the appearance of being a big shiny orb, almost like a marble.

View of the Land and the SkyAlthough for the most part we feel safe on our planet, the earth is made up of tectonic plates that are over the rocky mantle – this is the layer between the earth’s crust and its molten core. The earth is always bubbling and active below the surface. When the earth’s tectonic plates shift we will experience earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. In fact, the mountains were formed along the boundaries of these plates. All that pressure built up and exploded into some of the most gorgeous scenery on our planet today.

Our Planet EarthWe know it takes 365 days for earth to rotate completely around the sun. However, technically it actually takes 365 and 0.25 days to make the trip. This is how we get the leap year. The leap year occurs every fourth year. It’s easy to find out when the next leap year will take place. It is the year that can be divided exactly by four…2012, 2016, 2020 etc.

When the earth is traveling around the sun it does so with a slight tilt. It’s this tilt that gives us our seasons. Simply put, when the earth tilts away from the sun, the Northern half will have winter, while the Southern half is tilted towards the sun it will experience its summer. This is good to know when traveling to different parts of the world.

Re-use, Reduce, and RecycleWe may take the earth for granted, but we really should be appreciating her for giving us the protection and the ability to live out our lives. If it wasn’t for our home planet, none us would be here today. Let’s gain a new respect for this big blue marble we call home. It’s the only one we have.
